Heaven and Earth

Heaven and Earth, the debut release from John Gregorius, is a mixture of acoustic and electric instrumental music that ranges from earthy finger style guitar to ambient textural soundscapes.

The easy sound of Heaven and Earth provides a soft cushion in which one can hide away and decompress. However, this is not, by any means, a collection of lullabies as much as it is a grouping of beautifully performed compositions that allow the listener to slow down, feel comfortable, relax and truly appreciate the beauty of life’s often overlooked interludes.

The music combines Gregorius’ love of both the acoustic and ambient electric guitar, and the collision of these two styles results in a wonderful blend of music that is both easygoing and engaging.

Influenced by his travels to the North American Southwest, Wollo manifests the natural wonders of the area through his instrument, painting profound vistas with many types of acoustic, electric, electronic, and classical guitar voices.

Lingering Day

As the tenth Darshan Ambient release on the Spotted Peccary label, Lingering Day is the perfect album to mark such a milestone. The album features all the hallmarks that listeners have come to expect from a great Darshan Ambient release; effortless chilled grooves, glowing ambient textures, signature guitar melodies, delicate piano lines, processed electric guitar work, and nuanced synth-string passages are all present and accounted for throughout the fourteen tracks of Lingering Day.

Michael Allison is the lone creative force behind Darshan Ambient, single-handedly composing, performing and recording all of the music himself, and for Lingering Day his skills are in top form. Allison has created what could quite possibly be the ultimate album for Darshan Ambient fans, infusing the tracks with all of the trademark characteristics and nuances that listeners have enjoyed so much from his music over the past fifteen years. The textural ambient soundscapes that dominate tracks like “The Seven Sleepers” “Bee’s Fade” “Hand In The Clouds” and “Umbra” are truly sublime and gorgeous. The upbeat rhythms and skilled guitar work found on “Mover” “Kissing Crust” and “The Seven Sleepers Part 2” are executed with artistry and grace. The easy comfort of “Silver” and “White Calm” wrap the listener in a warm blanket of familiarity, while the jazz-flavored “Erroneous” and “The Lost Hunter” are ideal anthems for a lazy day.

With its serene atmospheres and cinematic orchestrations Lingering Day portrays a true sense of wonder and space, and from the delicate rhythm of “Snowflake” that opens the album with a restrained urgency, to the ambient textural title track that closes the album by slowly stretching time to savor those final moments, Lingering Day may very well be the most perfect Darshan Ambient album to date.

Eclipse

Long ago, before science explained the mechanics of the heavens, primitive cultures looked to the skies for insight and enlightenment. Predicting events, measuring time, provoking awe and terror, the observation of the celestial sphere was of utmost importance, and through those mystic ages the shock of an unexpected eclipse would become a beacon in time, impacting people’s lives, religions, and cultures for generations. This meaningful phenomenon is the inspiration for ECLIPSE, the second collaboration of tribal-ambient soundscapes from ethno-electronic recording artists Frore & Shane Morris.

Merging the boundaries of ambient, tribal, and organic electronic, ECLIPSE presents a fusion of deep trance percussion, primitive winds, and dream-soaked electronics into an enigmatic soundworld of timeless tribal magic. Continuing the sonic journey started on the duo’s first collaboration, BLOOD MOON, ECLIPSE explores new territories of trance-inducing polyrhythms, deep harmonic meditations, and a potent combination of exotic instruments from around the globe including didjeridoo, ethnic flutes, gongs, djembe, frame drum, and udu pots. Merging these exotic instruments together with organic synth textures and ethereal atmospheres, Frore & Morris craft a primordial ambient experience that further explores the electro-organic soundcurrent introduced by artists like Vidna Obmana, Robert Rich, Steve Roach, and Byron Metcalf.

Blending modern and primal elements into a compelling polyrhythmic experience, the music of ECLIPSE offers a sonic kaleidoscope of mystery, imagination and deep-seated wonder. Tapping into a reverence for power, energy, and illumination, the synergistic artistry of Frore & Shane Morris coalesces into a majestic tapestry of atmospheres and drifting grooves, representing an ancient connection to the environment, planet, and ultimately the universe.

The Chroma Plateau

With twenty releases to his credit, Jesse Sola, the lone creative force behind Numina, has been crafting compositions of electronic ambient sound spaces for nearly two decades. During that extensive career, Numina has defined – and refined – a signature sound realized from a collection of hardware synthesizers, effects, and a custom modular Eurorack synth system.

The latest in this personal exploration of electronic expression is Numina’s debut solo release on the Spotted Peccary label, THE CHROMA PLATEAU. This spacey, ethereal journey is a deep listening experience where wondrous ambient-electronic spaces fill a vast sonic canvas, unleashing faraway and introspective states of mind. Complex synthesized evolutions, wispy bell tone soundscapes, and foundational analog drones coalesce into a complete presentation of ephemeral moments and expansive soundworlds.

With its gentle use of minimal sequences and sparse compositions, THE CHROMA PLATEAU easily finds it’s place within the firmament of traditional spacemusic albums, and with track titles like “Intergalactic Traveler,” “Beaming Up The Fossils,” “Bringer of the Beings,” “Sky Descender,” and “Living in the Clouds,” the listeners thoughts may be tempted to imagine the heavens. However, even though there is some direction implied by the track titles themselves, Sola hopes to leave the details open for interpretation. “I never want to invoke any feeling, emotion, or direction on how my music should or should not be interpreted by the listener. This music is meant for any occasion the listener chooses – sleeping, hiking, star-gazing, philosophizing, commuting, etc. – a soundtrack for one’s current activity.”

No matter how the listener chooses to interface with the music, THE CHROMA PLATEAU is most certainly filled with deeply inspiring and beautiful moments, constantly evolving as the scenery of Numina’s refined sonic palette unfurls to reveal a marvelous mosaic of colors and dreams.

Organic, lush and sensual.

Robert Rich’s first solo studio album in three years seductively blends languid polyrhythms with influences as diverse as South Indian Karnatic music, post-rock, jazz, and minimalism.

The title comes from ylang ylang, a flowering tree that grows in South Asia, with a mysterious fragrance that embodies elements of shadow and light, eros and gnosis, earth and sky.

The Biode

Robert Rich delivers a satisfying collection of seething electronic ambience on this surrealist electronic journey through the microbiome. Exploding neurons reassemble to build a metamind. If an anthill could talk, what would it say? What would music sound like if we collaborated with fungi? We are not alone in this fractal universe.

We imagine ourselves to be individuals, as if our genome defines us. In fact, we’re each a collective, a network of organisms, with our unique microbiome of bacteria, viruses, fungi, organelles. Some work in harmony, some work in discord, but that shifting collective defines each individual in a blurry but more complete way. Let’s call it the Biode, a biomic node, the nexus or gathering place where a community of organisms combines to become a unit of individuality or consciousness.

Even the mitochondria that power our cells have their own separate DNA, perhaps ancestors of a virus that permeated the cell walls of an early eukaryote. Like those primitive cells, our skin is a porous membrane, a gatekeeper to let friends in, shun enemies, breathe and slough off waste. What we consume becomes part of us. What we breathe becomes part of us. Our boundaries are fuzzy.

Although we think of our consciousness as a continuous stream of self, it too is a system of interacting systems. We can view each neuron as an organism, too simple to know the thoughts that we are thinking. Perhaps an anthill thinks while the ants send their signals. Perhaps a forest thinks while the mycorrhizome interconnects with bacteria, nutrients and rootlets. Perhaps the Earth thinks, as its skin shimmers.

Maybe we can learn how to communicate with these systems, to regard them as minds, to see ourselves as systems like them. Perhaps that will mark a new stage in mind’s evolution.

The Return of a Masterpiece
30th Anniversary High Definition Remastered Edition

Since its release in 1988, Dreamtime Return has earned its reputation as a genuine classic. The two-CD magnum opus is one of the most important, widely known and highly respected release in Steve Roach’s vast body of work. It serves as an essential benchmark within the Electronic-Ethno-Atmospheric genre.

Roach’s travels in the Australian outback, along with studies of the Aboriginal Dreamtime, and his desert walkabouts in California were the lifeblood for this recording which even today sounds like a transmission from the near future and the very distant past.

“Musically Dreamtime Return richly deserves its classic status, but Roach also deserves credit for leading electronic musicians out of their sheltered studios and into an active relationship with the landscape, the wider world, and deep cultural history. The whole genre is stronger and more relevant for his example.”   – Stephen Hill, Hearts of Space Radio

Three decades after its release, the true expansive depth of this iconic masterpiece has been meticulously unveiled, revealing an entirely new listening experience. With this 30th Anniversary High Definition remastered edition, Spotted Peccary’s Howard Givens utilizes his years of technical knowledge with electronic music, an extensive array of analog and digital tools, and his passion for this seminal work, to restore the original sonic nature and visionary intention, taking the listener deeper into the dreamtime.

Before Sunrise

Rich with harmonic texture and delicate detail, sound-sculptor Jeff Greinke’s BEFORE SUNRISE presents an exquisite arrangement of ambient chamber music. The album follows a natural progression from the composer’s previous works, featuring abstract soundscapes and emotive passages of effortless beauty, created with an abundance of acoustic instruments. Piano, cello, viola, winds, brass, and vibraphone, all blend fluently with Greinke’s own sampled textures, synthesizers, and other electronic elements, resulting in an expansive palette of rich timbres that underscore a nuanced display of ambient impressionism.

Spanning the genres of modern classical, electronic, and ambient, BEFORE SUNRISE gently evolves, flowing through a predominately non-linear structure. The music is characteristically slow-moving, and the balance between composition and improvisation reveals an organic sound that is vital for a dynamic listening experience. The string instruments are recorded in such a way as to highlight the sound of the bow moving across the strings, and this attention to both acoustic details and performance techniques feeds the music’s natural quality. Greinke explains, “I instructed the musicians not to shy away from squeaks and scrapes that sometimes happen while playing such instruments. It’s the first time I’ve really paid attention to those sounds and I made sure to bring those qualities into the mix when appropriate. I find that those sounds evoke a lonely, abandoned landscape that appeals to me.” Indeed, the recordings conjure a desolate, and at times melancholy terrain, while the warmth and depth of the electronic textures offer a lush, comforting blanket of sound.

Greinke takes deep inspiration from the sights, sounds, sensations, and atmosphere of his natural surroundings, and as a result BEFORE SUNRISE is an intimate and spacious work that unfolds with the majestic subtlety of a pre-dawn sky.

Threshold Point

Norwegian sound-artist Erik Wøllo’s 23rd album delivers a collection of carefully crafted compositions: introspective, yet melodic electronic music. It is pensive and reflective upon passing and transition; several sequencer-driven pieces contrast with surrounding dreamlike ambient soundscapes. Wøllo’s mood is contemplative and expressively intense, capturing an authentic moment in time.

Threshold is defined as a magnitude or intensity that must be exceeded for a certain reaction, phenomenon, result, or condition to occur or be manifested.

Wøllo says, “For me, Threshold Point is a musical idea of an actual transformation: to cross a threshold, going from one form to another… into a change. Unfolding over time, gradually bridging and leading into new states or places. In my music, patterns and evolution are basic elements, always retaining an emotional connection with the melodies and the textures.”

These ideas are reflected in the beautiful cover image created by artist Rodrigo Adolfo: approaching new spaces that are symbolically represented by a bridge with gateways, leading into a shimmering distant light.

Wøllo offers a calm, otherworldly and self-contained sound on Threshold Point. This release possesses a quieter nature then his previous Different Spaces album; it’s somewhat more reserved and withdrawn.

“Some of these pieces were written in 2016 under special and tragic circumstances. I was staying in Brooklyn for some weeks while my sister grew more ill and died. I recorded in a tiny room at her neighbor’s apartment on Henry Street. I sense these circumstances influenced the music, making it more ethereal and humble than some of my other works. Where Different Spaces was a bit of a memorial to her, these pieces were composed earlier during the midst of the crisis.”

A reflection on changing states, passing a threshold, evolving into something new, this is a musical expression where the melody and the accompaniment merge to create an equilibrium of sound, as if watching something stopped in a camera frame.

“Andrei Tarkovsky once said film is a mosaic of time,” Wøllo reflects. “I found that to be a very inspiring metaphor for creating this album. Music also operates with this concept, developing a duration in the literal sense. It is the fixing of reality, the fixing and conservation of time.”

With Threshold Point, Erik Wøllo has conjured a remarkably visceral electronic album. It’s a dynamic collection of earthy, hypnotic, and pulsating soundtextures; the work of a passionate artist at the forefront of the electronic music genre.

The Vast Expanse

THE VAST EXPANSE, Sverre Knut Johansen’s third release on the Spotted Peccary Music label, offers a fantastic sci-fi themed electro-symphonic trek through the human awareness and contemplation of the Universe and its origin. Joined by acclaimed ambient guitarist David Helpling, Johansen shapes intriguing musical meditations, delicately crafting organic and synthetic environments that effortlessly underscore the grandeur of the album’s magnificent theme.

Driven by compelling rhythmic elements, the music is always in motion as orchestrated arpeggios and pulsing bass lines wind their way through rich atmospherics and heavenly dreamscapes. Johansen’s soaring melodies and detailed sequences, supported by Helpling’s spacial guitar textures and deep layered atmospheres, evoke finely tuned soundspaces filled with mystery and awe.

Inspired by the theory of the Big Bang and the writings of the late theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, Johansen crafted the album’s theme around the mysteries and theories surrounding the very beginning of the Universe, and humankind’s place in the vast expanse. Johansen explains, “All of us eventually ask ourselves ‘Where did we come from?’, ‘How did we come to exist?’ We know everything is in motion and expanding outward from a single point. This album is about that journey inside our mind trying to connect us all together with the Universe, a reflection upon the creation and how it all started.”

Track titles like “Origins of the Universe”, “Space and Time”, “DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid)”, “Perfect Creation”, and “Abiogenesis” highlight Johansen’s thematic focus, while the music, filled with wonder, drama, and determination, accentuates the human search for cosmic meaning on this memorable musical exploration through the limitless themes of origin, expansion, and creation.

Slow Heat – 20th Anniversary Remastered Legacy Edition

Slow Heat was the premier release on Steve Roach’s personal Timeroom Editions label, which has now grown to 45 releases. This 1998 long-form zone represents an early example of Steve’s infinite playback soundworld environments explored on The Dream Circle and since developed into a substantial area in his vast body of work.

Slow Heat breathes in and exhales a constant flow of calming influence and serenity directly extracted from Steve’s desert habitat. Shaped over two summers of evaluation on his playback system wired to the outside patio, the natural environment of the simmering Sonoran nights were found to be in perfect harmony with the Slow Heat atmosphere. By running microphones fifty feet from the Timeroom out into the desert night, a pure moment of natural magic was captured and woven into Slow Heat. Perhaps no other of Steve’s long-form pieces has placed the listener in such an intimate and subtle expression of the sensual, expansive nature of the desert atmosphere.

This 2018 remaster by Howard Givens fine-tunes this piece to a new level by utilizing the advancements of audio mastering technology revealing the deeper, spacial qualities at a sublime level.

Molecules Of Motion

Molecules of Motion is a sonic marvel: shimmering, pulsing, moving, emotional and engaging. A tapestry of sequencer-spun patterns floats upon an atmosphere of lush emotive textures alive with a vibrant, life-affirming glow. These four pieces can best be described as meditations upon elegant motion and electro-sensual space.

On his first studio album since his recent Grammy nomination, Steve Roach calls upon an expansive 35-year legacy at the forefront of electronic music creation. Molecules of Motion is a masterful album with roots in the Berlin School and a foot in the transcendent unknown of the future flowing into now. Roach’s sonic universe merges into a realm that induces a weightless, three-dimensional sensation: a feeling of floating while simultaneously energized and informed from a serene calm center.

His music itself has long transcended the tools with which it is made, while his choice of hardware-only, and mostly analog, instruments is fundamental to the signature sound of Molecules of Motion. It is proof positive of the artist bringing the high and deep together in this touchstone release.

As his creative approach evolves, the categories of classification dissolve. The rich palette of synth textures and intricate layers of lattice-work embraces the senses activating a heightened awareness while evoking an emotional resonance and reverie, a quality unique within all of Roach’s soundworlds.

This mesmerizing masterpiece of multi-dimensional analog sequencer spun music connects directly to Steve Roach’s passion for the interweaving of pure emotion, energy, delicate grace and driving flow. Interconnected melodic-rhythmic forms bloom into a constant morphing state of kaleidoscopic change. Over several months before this piece was recorded, many directions were explored, motifs developed and structures were revealed evolving up to the moment when “Electron Birth” was realized in its final creation.
